Warren Farm – a year on
“The quality of the land is much better than anyone expected”

By Sarah Ferguson

Warren Farm is now beginning to look as if someone cares. That some one is Alan Rabet, a young farmer from St Peter. Alan intends to use traditional methods where possible and is working hard at bringing the land back into order.
The first crop of Jersey Royals was harvested this year. There are beef cattle in the fields and there will eventually be a small herd of dairy cows. It is also a Jersey tradition that there should be a goat on a farm so no doubt a goat will join the menagerie. Alan wants to be as organic as possible so it is also possible that there may be vraic on the fields again. The quality of the land is much better than anyone expected and the Royals were particularly tasty.
Alan works with John Hackett (of sausage and bacon fame) so it is likely that some of John’s pigs will also be seen again on Noirmont Point but the complete stocking of the farm with animals will have to wait until it is possible to live in the house.
Restoration of the Farm House will take a little longer. Alan is still waiting for the lease to be prepared and is reluctant to start work on the interior until the lease is completed and signed. He has, however, started on re rendering the front of the house so that it can be made properly watertight and the wall on the gable end of the house is also being repointed. Some of the pointing was in such poor condition that it was possible to put your hand through the gaps. Alan is also acquiring fixtures and fittings for the house and can be found frequenting the sale rooms when he has a minute.
Working with John Hackett has given Alan the enthusiasm to consider how he can make the farm a part of the community with educational visits from the schools and produce for sale. He is also well on the way to setting up a tractor museum with his collection of ancient tractors which will eventually be on show at the farm.
