Members of Les Quennvais School’s Environment Group have designed and are selling eco-friendly, re-usable and ethically sound shopping bags and backpacks.
The project has seen the young environmentalists working with a co-operative of ladies in India, who are trying to re-build their lives after the Tsunami.
A competition was held in the school to come up with a design. The winning entry, which was selected by a panel of judges including the Connetable Mike Jackson and the Headteacher John Thorpe, was sent out to the ladies in India, who made the 100% organic cotton bags.
The Parish supported the scheme by lending the school the money to set the project up. Cash raised from the sale of bags will go towards environmental projects in the school.
The bags went on sale priced £2.50 in November at Les Quennevais Christmas Fayre.
Photos of the women's co-operative were on display and there was also a chance to meet Year 9 student Ross Rondel, whose design was chosen from 150 entries.
Many students, staff and parishioners purchased bags in the run up to Christmas, but they are still availble for purchase at St Brelade's Parish Hall, or orders can be left with Kate Sibcy at the school. Please include a full postal address and a cheque made payable to Les Quennevais School with details of number required and style (backpack or shopper)
