St. Aubin underwater
High tides and low pressure and heavy rain bring floods to St. Aubin’s village.

It is a fairly rare occurence. It has happened in the past, but this is the second time in recent years that St. Aubin has become flooded. However, on this occasion it was not only St. Aubin that suffered. As everyone will recall a stretch of sea wall at West Park also collapsed.

Jan Chapman of Peterborough Garage (who took these dramatic photographs) said “We were almost expecting a boat or two to draw up at the pumps”.

Although the flooding lasted only two hours or so, there was considerable disruption to traffic and some premises along Le Neuve Route and on The Bulwarks experienced flood damage.

Centenier Arthur Morley told La Baguette that many Honorary Officers turned out to re-direct traffic, and later to assist in the mop up.

Connétable Mike Jackson said that is was only the second time he could recall the tide washing over the Bulwarks and flooding properties. He added: “There have been times when unusually high tides have caused spillage and on this occasion, the strong southerly winds and low atmospheric pressure made it inevitable”.
