The future of two St. Brelade sports clubs under discussion
by La Baguette Reporter
INTERNATIONAL bowls matches and the future of two bowls clubs in St. Brelade are under threat due to rising maintenance costs against a background of falling membership.
Derek de la Haye, Assistant Director of Education Sport and Culture has been discussing the dilemma with members of both clubs. Mr la Haye said:
"I've had numerous meetings with officials from the clubs and Bowls Jersey. We are trying to find a solution as to the best way to move forward for the sport. The St. Brelade Bowls Club, adjacent to the Les Quennevais Sports Centre, was founded in 1988 and Les Creux Bowls Club, completed in 1999 was designed to host the Men's British Isles Bowls Championships and is the only club in the Channel Islands to have two greens."
At a recent meeting the ESC proposal that the two consider merging or sharing facilities was discussed - but no conclusions were reached.
A member of Les Creux Club told La Baguette: "The answer is of course for both clubs to attract more members. It is perceived as a sport for more mature people when it is very much a pastime for all ages and we would very much welcome younger players".
St. Brelade Bowls Club are also looking to increase their membership by offering free sessions on selected dates during the summer.
