Jersey Petanque Club's 25th
And two of the club’s founders are still regular players
by Keaven Taylor

PETANQUE in Jersey was introduced by then local vet Mr Tony Allchurch and friends who used to play on St Ouen's beach. The four friends then had the idea to start a club, and put an advert in the local Jersey Evening Post in September 1985 encouraging others to join them and established the Jersey Petanque Club. In June of the following year the Club hosted its first international petanque competition out at the Elizabeth Castle as part of the new Festival Jersey-France with a visit by a team of boulistes from Coutances.

This was the start of the annual visit in June for players from Coutances with 2011 being the 25th anniversary year both of the club and the match. A Vin d' Honneur was hosted by the Constable of St Brelade at the Parish Hall, with a meal after at the Boathouse. Founder members Tony Allchurch and Derek Hart (pictured above) are still regular players.

Anyone wishing to know more about the game of Petanque whether they are young or middle aged and would like to meet other people in serious competition or for fun games or just socially, Petanque caters for everyone.

Contact the Jersey Petanque Club through their website or by contacting the President Joan Le Mercier on 739460.
