Fresh thinking at Red Houses
Managing many smiles from staff and customers alike

Eighth in a series of profiles featuring one of our regular advertisers, and those behind the businesses in acknowledgement of their invaluable support and generosity upon which the publication of this newsletter depends. In this edition, La Baguette editor, Jeff Hathaway talks to Peter Slater , Branch Manager of Waitrose, (and former Manager of Checkers) Red Houses

A national brand it may be, but Waitrose at Red Houses is very much a local enterprise, where not only the majority of staff are residents of St. Brelade but are also partners as Branch Manager, Peter Slater, explained.

"As part of the John Lewis Partnerhip every employee of Waitrose staff shares in the profits of the company which are evenly distributed to everyone no matter their status within the business - effectively becoming a shareholder, a business owned by its employees and hence 'Partnership'. Each branch is encouraged to have a Partnerhip Voice and elections are held within the branch to form a Partnership Voice Group giving opportunity to directly question the Waitrose Management Board" He said.

Peter has recently received a Chairman's Nomination to represent all five Waitrose Channel Islands Stores on the Partnership Council.

Peter also lives in St. Brelade with his wife Stephanie and daughter who attends Les Quennevais School. His food retailing career started with Safeway as a trainee, later taking up an appointment as Regional Manager with Somerfield before moving on to Morrisons. In 2009 the Sandpiper Group brought Peter to Jersey specifically to run the former Red Houses Checkers. Therefore with his wealth of experience it's not surprising that Waitrose were eager to keep him!

A keen sportsman, Peter lists amongst his interests football and skiing and is also an avid follower of Jersey Rugby Club.

Peter told La Baguette:

"I have also run three London Marathons and also took part in the ITEX walk in support of the Abbeyfield Jersey Society, Age Concern and SilkWorth. Our lively Springer Spaniel makes sure I stay fit". He also admitted that he has recently discovered the 'thrill' of bowls and has joined Les Creux Bowls Club.

And favourite holiday destination? 'Jersey' he said. "I have long been coming to the Island for holidays and breaks and although I am living and working here now it's still my favourite place".

The company has been very actively sourcing fresh produce and other products from local suppliers too - some 500 in total. "Fresh food with good provenance and traceability is very important to us as is quality. Jersey has both in abundance and you cannot get fresher than locally grown", he said. "In the twelve weeks or so that the store has been open I have been hugely encouraged by the comments made by our customers both online and in the 'Store Comment Book'. My favourite one left in the book simply says: 'It's great to see a smiling team of people delivering great customer service.' That in essence sums up what Waitrose strives for, happy staff and happy customers."
