Jersey Petanque Club, Quennevais
by Steve Foster

The Jersey Petanque Club has its origins in friendly games of boules on St. Ouen’s beach. This culminated in regular gatherings of enthusiasts at the Old Portelet Inn before the club was eventually established in April 1986.

In 1995, the club’s terrains and clubhouse at Les Quennevais were officially opened, giving the JPC a purpose built facility; the envy of many other clubs. In 2003, the clubhouse was extended and is now used regularly for competitions and social events.

The club run a number of competitions throughout the year, including an ‘Invitation Doubles’ competition, open to non-members interested in playing the game and joining the club. Regular sessions are held each Wednesday afternoon which are open to anyone to try their hand at the game.

The highlight of the Club’s year is the PBS Open Doubles Competition which has been held annually since 1988.

This competition regularly attracts a large entry from the UK as well as France and Guernsey. It is held over the first weekend in May. In 2004, a record number of 96 teams took part. Club members regularly participate in the summer and winter leagues organised by the Jersey Petanque Association, and in the Guernsey Open Competition which also forms part of the teams Annual Inter-Insular match.

Another important event in the club’s calendar is the annual hosting of players from Coutances and the return trip made by the Jersey club. The club organise social events all year round with those in summer usually based around weekend competitions. In winter ‘Soup Nights’ are held monthly where games of Petanque are followed by a warming supper.

The club’s annual dinner is held in November at which prizes for the various competitions are presented, including the player of the year. For more information see:
