Red Cross to pilot recycling scheme in St. Brelade

Man and van required too!
by by Teresa Patten

The British Red Cross will be opening of a retail shop in St. Helier in the near future.

We have been working closely with Sara Clews, who is a British Red Cross fundraiser on the island, and she put us in touch the Transport & Technical Services Recycling Centre.

We intend to set up a kerbside recycling scheme which will provide stock for our St. Helier shop.

Our organisation operates similar schemes across the UK which now form a significant part of our fund-raising activities.

After discussions, it has been agreed to run a pilot scheme in St. Brelade, subject to the necessary permissions of the Parish and other authorities. A meeting is planned in the near future.

Connétable Mike Jackson advises us that our proposal comes at a time when the Parish has been assessing roadside collection schemes similar to those already operating successfully in some other parishes in the island.

We are therefore maintaining a very positive view. We are sure the scheme will prove successful and can be extended islandwide, We are aiming to recruit a self employed 'man and van' who will distribute and collect the sacks for us.

The ideal recruit will be someone who lives in the Parish and is familiar with its roads, and perhaps is already engaged in similar delivery and collection work.

Connétable Mike Jackson has agreed that any interested party can, in the first instance, contact him at the Parish Hall on 741141 to obtain further details.
