Down Your Way walk
The Lieutenant Governor, joins sponsored walk.
by Sarah Ferguson

On a bright sunny afternoon on May 25th, a large party comprised of members of Variety, Societe Jersiaise and luminaries of the Parish set out on a Down Your Way walk. This is sponsored by Variety and organised by the Connetables and Societe Jersiaise.

The Connetable arranges for an interesting route, usually along byways not known to the public, and for a meal for participants at the Parish Hall. The walk is led by Blue Badge Guides who point out interesting historical landmarks along the route.
This walk ambled along Rue des Bruleries, which forms part of the perquage route from St Peter, up a private lane to La Route du Francfief, along Rue de Conet, and along the Railway Walk. It then cut across the back of Les Quennevais sports field, down Water Lane and back to the Parish Depot.
The Guides, who included Paul Nicolle and Tom Bunting, outlined a number of fascinating pieces of history as we walked. Notable places visited included Franc Fief Farm, home of Enid and Ernest Quenault. As we passed fields of Jersey cows, they rushed to the fence to see what was happening. Apparently Jersey cows are extremely inquisitive and always like to know what is going on. We were also well protected by the Honorary Police who guided us across every main road and prevented any of us from being run over or lost.
The walk was followed by an excellent meal at the Parish Hall, catered for by Janet and the chef from the Yacht Club.
The walk also celebrated Oak Apple Day as the nearest weekend to 27th May. This is the day which celebrates the accession of Charles II to the throne Jersey apparently celebrates this earlier than the UK since the restoration was announced on 27th May. Prior to WWII this was always celebrated in the Island but has been woefully neglected since the War. The Chief Barker had written to H.M. the Queen to report that we were celebrating Oak Apple Day and His Excellency the Governor read out a reply from the Queen at after the meal.
At the end of the celebrations the Connetable of St Brelade passed the copper Milk Jug to the Connetable of St John who will be hosting the next walk in July.
