Who has not noticed the carefully cultivated fields alongside Route de la Haule. These are the responsibility of Andrew Lucas, the second generation Lucas to farm these fields. The produce is available in their shop, located just behind La Haule Manor Hotel.
The Lucas family are following in the tradition of General Le Couteur who farmed here in the mid 1800s. They produce a wide variety of vegetables, including carrots, potatoes, lettuce, parsnips, spinach and pumpkins, which are all sold in the shop fresh from the field. If you shop early in the morning the dew is still on the leaves. They also retail other local produce and carefully selected imports such as apples, bananas, oranges and marmalade oranges. There is also home made cake, Vienna Bakery bread and Darren Quenault’s milk. You can also find a selection of rarer fruits such as passion fruit, kum quats, prickly pear; it is a gourmet cook’s delight.
And that is only one part of the business. Outside and across the road, there are vast numbers of bedding plants and vegetables, all raised in the polytunnels.
Keen gardeners with small gardens can also buy small trugs of Jersey Royal seed potatoes in the spring. Andrew can also provide ready filled pots and hanging baskets either ready made or to your choice of plants. For those who haven’t got the space for these there is also a great selection of indoor baskets of decorative plants – which last for ever - or a colourful hand tied bouquet. .
