St. Aubin Beach Litter
by Margaret Holland-Prior
We read the weather forecast for the weekend with care and fingers were crossed that it would improve as predicted. And it did! The Jersey Evening Post and BBC Radio Jersey gave the litter pick good coverage but I could only guess how many volunteers would turn up!
The Marine Conservation Society sent a very helpful folder, giving advice on risk assessment and general do’s and don’ts. So, well provided with biodegradable plastic bags, rubber gloves, long handled grabbers, and a first aid kit, I was at the RCIYC slip in St Aubin by 1.45pm to welcome volunteers
By 2pm, 18 volunteers had gathered and after a brief welcome and guidance, everyone was issued with gloves and bags, and we set off to the falling tide. Some went to the far end of Pebble Beach and others fanned out over the beach, gradually working our way eastwards as the tide allowed.
Deputy and Dawn Troy, Nicky Browne, from St Brelade’s Youth Club and I cleaned along the inner wall of the Harbour and by 4pm we all decided we had done enough. We were tired out, so we gathered at Murrays, where we enjoyed a cup of coffee and cake and chatted over the afternoon’s work.
Items collected from the beach included a damaged rubber dinghy, a rotten boat, various iron bars, a sailing boot, small spade, many drinks cans, glass and plastic bottles, condoms, cigarette ends, carpeting, rope and netting, plastic bags, fishing hooks, - the list goes on.
Thanks to Troy Developments for sponsorship of St Brelade in Bloom and to Murray’s for subsiding our refreshments, which we felt we had truly deserved!
