Sat12 and Sun 13 July 2008. ‘One of the largest community events in the Island’.
by Andrew Le Brun
The biennial JEP West Show will take place on the weekend of 12 and 13 July 2008 and, as one of the largest community events in the Island, is expected to attract in excess of 15,000 visitors.
In 1997, organisers of one of the Island’s annual cattle shows, the Three Western Parishes Show encompassing St Mary, St Peter and St Ouen, met to find a way of re-vitalising their show and attracting a wider audience. The Cattle Association of the Parish of St Brelade was invited to join them. The West Show Association was formed, and the West Show was born.
Association President is Mr Eddie Cuthbert, and the Hon. Vice Presidents consist of the Connétables of St. Ouen, St. Mary, St. Peter and St. Brelade.
The "feel" of the show for 2008 will be very similar to previous ones. The main attractions will feature equestrian and canine skills. A troupe of French performers will also entertain around the showground.
In addition to the main attractions, there will be live musical entertainment throughout the weekend, plenty to eat and drink, and marquees highlighting the best traditions of Island life and selling Genuine Jersey produce.
All of this is in addition to the usual cattle show, donkey racing, show-jumping, and parades of heavy horses, classic cars, military vehicles, and agricultural vehicles.
The JEP will be sponsoring the show again in 2008. Other main sponsors are Rathbones, Lloyds TSB, KPMG, and the Channel Islands Co-op.
